Petrarch howls Laura, and stone becomes a sculpture

Angewandte, Vienna, 2023

Wood, metal, Krastal marble, tape.

The author made the object from a single piece of wood by hand (with hand tools). Over March to June during a stay in Vienna.

The title, based on a sentence from the lyrics by Alexey Fishev (the Russian punk band Orgasm Nostradamus), presents the power of human thought to materialize in a work of art. This could be called the positive effect of the great possibility of an idea. But what does the negative way of reasoning about the world do to the individual? How much does the artist benefit from its self-destructive lifestyle practice?
Alina Izmailova attempts to find the answer by approaching the same method in her work with wood. To create a sculpture through the deconstruction of the material. That is why the work's final point becomes only the bark's corporeal shell. It simultaneously creates a sense of the fragility of the object and its wildness in relation to the world of the gallery where it is exhibited. Through the wounds of this shell can be seen metal spikes. They are sharp and give the impression of touching the skin. It is a structure that has no physical function of supporting the sculpture. It presents its inner world. Strong and independent.
